Lumberjacks Fail to Hold One Goal Lead, Fall by the Slimmest of Margins

MUSKEGON, Michigan (October 18th) – In yet another one goal contest, the third period proved to be the demise of the Muskegon Lumberjacks as the Sioux Falls Stampede scored a pair of goals in the final frame to edge by with a 2-1 victory tonight at the L.C. Walker Arena.

The first period saw a scoreless draw in which the Stampede were able to outshoot the Lumberjacks by a slim 8-6 margin.

In the early parts of the second period, the Lumberjacks (4-3-1, 9 points) were able to get on the board first courtesy of their power play at the 3:38 mark as Matt Iacopelli scored his third goal in as many games finding a loose puck in the slot to fire it past David Jacobson (4-0-1) that was helped by Janik Moeser and Carson Gatt.

Muskegon took that one goal lead into the third period with Sioux Falls still holding the shot advantage, 18-13.

The third period would belong to the visitors as the Stampede (6-2-0, 12 points) tallied the equalizer at the 5:27 mark from Tony Calderone for the second goal of the season from Keith Burchett and Michael Buonincontri.

Just 2:05 after the Calderone marker, Sioux Falls grabbed their first lead of the night at 2-1 with Dennis Kravchenko’s second goal of the season as he roofed a shot top shelf past Jordan Uhelski’s (2-1-1) blocker side.  Zeb Knutson tallied the lone assist on the Kravchenko strike.

The score held through the remainder of the game as the Lumberjacks had an opportunity late in regulation with a 2:00 power play with 2:27 remaining in the third, but came up empty even after pulling Uhelski for the extra attacker with 48 seconds left.
